Research interests

Research interests

My research interests sit at the intersection of governance, state formation, and global health, focusing on how institutions and communities respond to crises. I am particularly interested in epidemic preparedness, the gendered dimensions of care, and how public health interventions shape states. My previous research explored feminist civil society and transitional justice in The Gambia.

Background

Marie Cox is a joint doctoral candidate in African Studies at the University of Edinburgh and in Public Health at Makerere University in Uganda, as part of the HEALENAE Doctoral Network. Her research explores public health, governance, and state formation in Uganda. She examines how epidemics and infectious disease control shape relationships between the state, international organisations, and local communities. She is particularly interested in the gendered dimensions of care and the roles of community health workers and caregivers in responding to public health challenges.

Marie holds a BA in Political Science from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MSc with distinction in Conflict, Security and Development from the University of Edinburgh.
