Based on fieldwork on traditional ranches in Northeast Brazil, this presentation analyzes how tree names embody the ongoing presence of Black women in the Pernambuco sertão. Exploring imbuzeiros and quixabeiras as a living archive, I examine how these trees preserve subaltern histories that official narratives attempt to erase. Rather than bringing forgotten pasts to light, this presentation demonstrates that the Caatinga functions as a biome of memory where trees visibly sustain life stories, making them vital entities for the continuous production of kinship, domesticity, and sociality in the landscape.
